Bruce Pettersen, DDS, 2008 Program Chair

President Mike Lewis and I are excited to invite you to the Academy’s first ever visit to beautiful New Mexico and to an outstanding meeting experience one of learning, fellowship and fun! Please join us March 5-9, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya on the tribal lands of the Native American Pueblo of Santa Ana. Located just 30 minutes north of the Albuquerque International Airport, the resort has March daytime temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees mixed with cool evenings. As a luxury resort and spa, there are unlimited activities including hot air ballooning, horseback riding, hiking, carriage rides, three outdoor heated pools, tennis, a championship golf course, and the ultimate spa to pamper yourself. Coupled with five restaurants and lounges (and numerous local restaurants) and beautiful views of the high desert with sunsets over the Sandia Mountains, this unique, magical setting will provide a perfect backdrop for our 52nd annual meeting.

The meeting will focus on many areas of personal and professional growth and Making a Difference in our lives and those that come to us for care. We want to highly encourage you to bring your spouse, team and colleagues, as the agenda will be perfect for all.

Chris Blackmore will kick-off our session on Wednesday evening. A nationally acclaimed magician, Chris has wowed audiences in Las Vegas, Reno and on TV. Through his use of comedy and amazing magic, he stirs the imagination and unlocks the mind to unlimited possibilities. He will inspire us about The Magic of Quality Service.

Our opening and closing speakers Carl Hammerschlag and Joan Borysenko are both mesmerizing. Dr. Carl Hammerschlag, author of The Dancing Healers is a master storyteller, internationally recognized author, speaker and healer. A Yale-trained psychiatrist, he has spent more than twenty years working with Native Americans, including fourteen years as chief of psychiatry at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center.

Trained as both a medical scientist and psychologist, Joan Borysenko, author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind, earned a doctorate in medical sciences at Harvard Medical School, where she also completed post-doctoral fellowships in experimental pathology, behavioral medicine and psychoneuroimmunology. She was instructor in medicine at Howard until 1988.

They will present a view that in our fast-paced world of technology, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and forget the healing power of mind and spirit. They will help us understand the transformational power that comes with a harmony between thoughts, actions and feelings—the foundation of the science of mind-body-spirit medicine. Both will give us practical take-home lessons for living a healthy life and bringing more joy and pleasure to our lives and our practices.

Our third keynote speaker is Tom Crum, the author of The Magic of Conflict. He will use his amazing powers of Aikido to teach us how to have optimum levels of energy, performance and productivity. His energetic lecture will also emphasize how to turn conflict into real solutions and strong relations.

During our Members Breakfast our guests may listen to LeAnn Thieman. She has an incredible story to tell as she was at the forefront of the Vietnam Orphans Airlift as the communists were overtaking Saigon. As an ordinary person, she struggled through extraordinary circumstances and found the courage to succeed. She will inspire you to balance your life, live your priorities and make a difference in the world. Also presenting for our guests during this time will be Donna Brogan representing Philips Oral Healthcare. She will be speaking on Women’s Wellness: An Oral Health Perspective.

On both Thursday and Saturday afternoons you will have numerous choices for different workshops:

• Doug Young combines his corporate background, professional training and real-life experiences to provide a unique blend of leading-edge insights and practical wisdom. His workshops are always motivational, memorable and mind-expanding. He will challenge you to unleash your potential.

• Yona Lunken, developer of Thinking Skills Seminars will hold court with two entirely different afternoon workshops. One will focus on Creating Effective Teams and the other on Creative Problem Solving Skills.

• Walter Heidery, a dentist from Toronto, Canada has created unique childcare and private educational centers across Canada that have significantly influenced child care and education throughout Canada. His story will inspire you, as he focuses on leadership.

• Our own Chuck Harding will guide us and our practices to A Higher Vision. Also, our Jim Jackson will share with those of us nearing retirement: Smart Ways to Handle Our Money.

• Sirona will also sponsor a workshop on integrating the CEREC CAD/CAM system into your office presented by AADPA member Mark Knollman.

• Gabe Don Sing, former clinical director at the Pankey Institute will explore an area of challenge to adult restorative practices: the severely worn dentition.

• And Mary Osborne and Joan Unterschuetz will tie everything together with a roundtable discussion about: The Healing Presence, The New Patient Experience and The Art of Possibility.

In addition to our leading edge presenters and workshops, on Friday afternoon you’ll have a myriad of choices to explore this distinctive environment. Besides our tennis and golf outings, there will be opportunities for hiking and horseback riding; a trip to Albuquerque or Santa Fe; or a tour of Acoma Pueblo, a distinctive native American town. You will not want to miss the exceptional shops, museums, art galleries and restaurants for which Santa Fe and Albuquerque are famous.

Our closing celebration on Saturday evening will bring to a culmination a week of exceptional learning opportunities together with the fellowship and fun that only our Academy provides. This will be an exceptional experience for all and one that will have profound impact on your personal and professional lives.

So…use our new online registration service or fill out the enclosed registration packets early, reserve your rooms (our room block is limited) and join us March 5-9, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya in beautiful New Mexico. See you there!!

The Magic of Quality Service

Chris Blackmore

We have a top-notch KICK OFF keynote speaker lined up! Chris Blackmore will reveal the secrets of customer service made famous by the most popular resort destination in the world!

A presenter at Disney’s Approach to Quality Service seminars attended by Fortune 500 key personnel, Chris breaks down what is involved in delivering world-class customer service. Using his H.E.A.R., T.H.I.N.K. and L.E.A.R.N. method of quality service, Chris simplifies the process of exceeding guest expectations and winning back a dissatisfied guest.

Blackmore is a professional magician, comedian and spokesperson. A popular club and banquet performer, Chris regularly appears (and disappears) in shows throughout the country and the world. His talent for quick wit and thought-provoking humor is balanced by a fun personality that wins over audiences. Moving easily between comedy and magic with a sharp gift of improvisation, he keeps all kinds of shows moving and full of energy.

You will learn to define quality customer service, identify service needs, evaluate service roadblocks, and create and implement quality service policies. All of this while laughing, and being amazed by Chris’s hilarious presentation style.

The Healing Spirit in Dentistry

Dr. Carl Hammerschlag

This is not a presentation about the genius of modern dental technology that allows practitioners to perform feats of wizardry previously unimaginable. Instead, it is one that will remind you of why you came into the profession in the first place — not only for the challenges, independence, and financial rewards — but for the sense of accomplishment and joy in making a difference in peoples lives.

Today’s health-care environment, with its regulations, limitations and litigation, often steals the joy from practice. In the languages of the science of psychoneuroimmunology, (PM or Mind/Body/Spirit Medicine), and anecdotal tales, Dr. H, will talk about the importance of connecting to people at the heart level as well as the instrument level. Doing this will lift your spirit, help you build a practice to which you will come with delight, and also help your patients become the principal agents in maintaining their dental health.

In his inimitable style, with wisdom, poignancy and humor, Dr. H guides a journey that will inspire you and magnify your healing power.

Unleashing Your Potential

Doug Young

There is no guaranteed path to becoming your “best self.” But there are skills, behaviors, thinking patterns, and actions that clearly distinguish people who create a life of meaning, fulfillment and achievement. With his positive and encouraging style, Doug will explore two key factors that can unleash the personal and professional potential within you.

1. Promoting self renewal.

We live in an era of Permanent White Water. The pace and complexity of everyday life is accelerating. To survive and thrive in this chaotic world, we need to identify where we are in the cycle of change and growth. Participants will explore the four phases of the Cycle of Renewal and begin to generate strategies and activities that support them in managing their lives.

2. Balancing life’s competing priorities.

We are increasingly expected to accomplish more, to a higher standard, in less time, using fewer resources. Explore the challenges of striving for balance as we allocate our time and energy to the many important aspects of our lives.

Creating Effective Teams

Yona Lunkin

Objectives: To understand key characteristics of an effective team.

Explanation: There is nothing more exciting then being part of a well-functioning team. This interactive, hands-on program is about understanding what a team is and how a team develops. Engaging in the activities and discussions, participants will learn and appreciate the importance of being a team member, what it takes to be part of a team that functions well, and how to build an effective team.

This program will feature:

• Team-building activities

• Understanding key terms

• Clarifying goals

• Insights into your teammates

• Features of effective communication

• Building trust

• Characteristics of an effective team

A Higher Vision

Dr. Chuck Harding

A new passion for dentistry can exist when you are able to convert your own personal philosophy of dentistry and standard of care into an appropriate model of practice.

How can we elevate our practice of dentistry to another level? Why are others already there and how did they find “it”? Is this secret reserved for the rich and famous or can it be applied to any practice? Can a different approach to treatment planning and case presentation really alter the patients healing response?

Chuck’s goal is to help participants find the belief in themselves, get beyond what frightens them, and have the courage to make a leap — the gap is not as wide as it seems. To use a racecar analogy, this presentation is about where performance tires meet the road.

I’m about to Retire... Now What?

Smart Ways to Handle Your Money.

James Jackson

With the average age of Academy members at 58 years of age, retirement planning is no longer an option but a necessity. We spend years putting money into a retirement plan and into personal savings and real estate, and then suddenly wonder how we can take it out to live without making a harmful mistake.

This presentation includes: how to develop long and short term investing game plans; asset allocation, determining a reasonable risk and return, decide on a “safe” amount to remove from your portfolio, remove money with the least amount of expense and trouble, avoid high fees, consider better alternatives than annuities and a list of stocks and mutual funds that should help you reach your goals.

Leadership Transcending Multiple Industries

A Practical Guide to Leadership Management

Dr. Walter Heidary

Some leadership concepts are appropriate and functioning within multiple industries. But what characteristics or qualities of leadership truly influence the dental team? What is tangible and what works?

Dr. Walter Heidary has two very successful relationship-based dental practices. Also Dr. Heidary is the owner of a chain of childcare, preschool and private educational academies across Canada.

With such diversity of business models, and services, the common link is a form of leadership that allows for practical management and phenomenal growth year after year.

The secret is to develop one team member at a time. As such, each team member is exposed to personal concepts including: awareness, choice, ability, willingness, accountability, commitment, trust, truth and integrity. After this personal work, the individuals became aligned with one another, and eventually attunement is reached.

The new energy, mood and spirit of the organization deliver world-class results.

As part of this journey, Dr. Heidary identifies;

• “The Top 10 Ingredients of a Successful Team” and

• “The Top 12 Reasons why team members are not doing what you expect.”

CEREC®- Providing Your Patients

21st Century Technology

Dr. Mark Knollman, With Assistants Brandy & Christine

If you are remotely considering adding CEREC technology to your practice, don’t want to miss this workshop! This is not a technical presentation. Rather, it is a logistical overview. This seminar will show you how to get the technology off the shelf and working for the benefit of your patients, staff, and you. Scheduling and implementation will be the primary focus.

Mark Knollman entered the digital age in 1995 by placing computers in each operatory and using digital radiography. Since that day he has never looked back. He purchased CEREC 3D as soon as it was released in the spring of 2003. Like other CEREC doctors, it became part of his normal routine after three months.

He will be joined by his chairside assistants: The Dynamic Duo, Brandy & Christine (a.k.a. “Brantine”). This trio will demonstrate what has launched their Asheville, North Carolina practice into the 21st century. CEREC dentistry can do the same for your office. It’s just a matter of time before you will receive a phone call asking, “Do you offer crowns in one appointment?” How will you answer? 2008 Meeting

From Stress to Strength

Joan Borysenko, Ph.D.

In our fast-paced world of technology, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and forget the healing power of mind and spirit. But when we take time to cultivate our own strengths, we’re more effective with patients, happier at home, and less likely to suffer from burnout and stress. Research on resilience has a lot to teach us about the connection between body, mind and spirit. People who are optimistic, altruistic, have a strong moral compass, value spirituality, approach life with lightness and humor, have strong relationships, and a sense of meaning and purpose not only survive, but thrive. In this session we’ll take a fantastic voyage from the molecular to the spiritual, with practical take home lessons that can bring more joy and pleasure to our lives.

At the conclusion of the keynote participants will be able to:

1. Define spirituality and relate it to healing.

2. List eight characteristics of resilience that are easily cultivated.

3. Define “healing presence” and list its 3 most important components.

Etiology, Diagnosis & Treatment of Severely Worn Dentition

Clinical and Behavioral Considerations.

Gabe Don Sing

Our greatest challenges in our dental practices are most often treating cases of extremely worn dentition. Complex clinical challenges can be compounded by issues of low trust on the part of patients due to previous treatment failures.

Hope for those patients can come in the form of an offer from the dentist and team to uncover and resolve the cause of the problem prior to offering restorative solutions.

A systematic diagnostic process will be presented in the form of a flow chart that will organize the contemporary information presented increasing probability of successful restorative outcomes.

Among other things the program addresses

following questions:

• How can I recognize wear caused by bruxism from wear from chewing (both anterior and posterior wear) from wear cause by some erosive process?

• What is an occlusal interference and what does it interfere with?

• Where do I even start treatment of severely worn cases?

• How can I get my patients to accept and afford to pay for so much dentistry?

After this personal work, the individuals became aligning with one another, and eventually attunement is reached.

The new energy, mood and spirit of the organization deliver World Class results.

As part of this journey, Dr. Heidary identifies:

• “The Top 10 Ingredients of a Successful Team” and

• “The Top 12 Reasons why team members are not doing what you expect.”
